PENGUINS

There are seventeen different species of penguins in the world all of which live by or near the sea. Most live on the coast of Antarctica and some in warmer places on the coast of South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Although each species is slightly different they cannot fly as their wings are adapted for life in the water. The Emperor penguins are the largest of the species at about a metre tall and weighing 35 kilograms. The smallest are the Little Blue or Fairy penguins at around 40 centimetres, weighing as little as 1 kilogram. They have a lifespan of up to fifteen years with the largest species living up to twenty five years.

Penguins are sociable creatures spending much of their time together with other members of the same species forming colonies to breed in what is known as rookeries. Colonies vary in size and can have from 500 to 50,000 penguins in them.

Penguins face many dangers while at sea from ocean predators like leopard seals, sea lions, sharks and killer whales who eat them für food, and on land rodents, foxes and birds steal their eggs. In the past there were more species of penguins and today some are endangered. Apart from natural predators, humans are equally responsible for the decline in some species and conservation groups are working protect them.

Fritz Pölking has spent much time in Antarctica and in the book he illustrates with wonderful photographs the various species and their habitat.
